Born in 1972 in the former Yugoslavia (now Serbia) Maria Vivod received her baccalaureate from the prestigious Sremski Karlovci High School, Serbia. She studied French language and literature at the University of Novi Sad, before venturing into anthropology at the University of Strasbourg, France. She received her doctorate there in sociology and demography - ethnology mention - in 2005. Her research themes are: medical anthropology / ethnomedicine, conflicts, polemology.
