Catherine Chalá is a social worker, a specialist in gender, interculturalism and human rights, and has worked on the implementation of public policies with priority groups throughout the country. She is an activist in the Afro-Ecuadorian women's movement, representative of CONAMUNE in the MAAD Network. She maintained a radio programme "Entre Tambores" and compiled the "Encyclopaedia of Afro-Ecuadorian Knowledge" published by UNICEF in 2008. She collaborates with foundations that promote rights, democracy and violence prevention: Fundación ESQUEL and Casa de Refugio MATILDE.
