Biography

Isabelle Matamoros is a gender historian, specialist in women's relationship to knowledge. She works on women's reading in the 19th century (how did women learn to read, what did they read, was it a means of emancipation?) and her research combines cultural history, the history of education and literature. She analyzes cultural inequalities in education, prejudices and representations around female reading, and trajectories of emancipation. She is also a specialist in the first feminists - Saint-Simonians, Flora Tristan
